Avignon is a French city on the left bank of the Rhone. It was the Papal residence in the 14th century. The Papal Palace is an enormous Gothic fortress that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another landmark that shares this honour is Avignon Bridge, of which there are only four of the original twenty-two arches still standing. The palace is currently operating as a museum. Two other museums you should go and see are the Musee du Petit Palais and the Calvet Museum. Don't forget to take a boat trip to Barthelasse Island, which has lots of parkland. Avignon is only half an hour away from Marseille and just over two and a half hours from Paris by train.
