Cozumel is an island surrounded by the infinite blue hues of the Caribbean ocean. This little part of Mexico has so far avoided becoming the cliched tourist trap for cruise ships, and instead clings to its rich cultural heritage, sharing its breath-taking natural scenes with the few who really go searching for it. While diving and snorkelling are the main draws, the pleasant town square is a nice place to spend the afternoon, and wanderlusts who explore the less-visited parts of the island on a rented scooter will be richly rewarded. The coastal road leads to small Maya ruins, a marine park and captivating scenery along the unforgettable windswept shore. Some American airlines fly direct from the US, but most European carriers will fly via Mexico City or a US city. There are regular passenger ferries from Playa del Carmen if Cozumel is an extension of your trip around Mexico.

With many different accommodation options available, all types of travellers are catered for. Prices start as low as 10 GBP a night in a hostel, and go up to about 150 GBP a night for an all-inclusive stay at a fancier chain hotel such as the Melia or the Intercontinental. Cozumel has been rated as one of the top 5 places in the world to dive, and with its large variety of marine life as well as its pristine reefs and colourful corals, it's not hard to see why. When you get under water, you have the chance to see up to 250 GBP different species of fish. It's common to see hawksbill turtles, nurse sharks, moray eels and groupers. But what if you don't dive? Enter the Atlantis Submarine! For around 70, you can dive to depths of 100 feet (30 meters) in this submarine. The underwater journey takes you to Chankanaab, an environmentally protected marine park. How incredible that even non-divers can take part in the thrilling adventures of underwater exploration.

If you are looking for a fun day out with children, consider Parque Chankanaab. The price of admission includes a sea lion show, a nice beach and pool, a botanical garden with 400 tropical plant species, a limestone lagoon inhabited by turtles, a crocodile exhibit and a pre-Hispanic tour. Other activities are also available, including snorkeling, diving and steam baths, but it will cost you extra. After a full and exhausting day out and about, head to Kinta. They have put a gourmet twist on Mexican classics, and this chic bistro is widely regarded as being one of the best restaurants on the island. The grilled scallops and shrimp with tomato-corn salsa and cilantro pesto is delightful, and even more so when served in the pretty garden. Whether your soul recovers from the peace of the underwater world, or basking on powder soft sand under a warm sun, Cozumel is surely a slice of heaven on earth.
