Eugene is the second-largest city in the state of Oregon and is located south of the Willamette Valley. It is known as the Emerald City and promoted using the strapline 'a great city for the Arts and Outdoors.' Eugene is a popular tourist destination because of its outdoor recreational opportunities and the beautiful setting. As such, the people who live and visit there enjoy freedom of the outdoors and tend to be 'free spirits.' One of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors of Eugene is a visit to one of its parks.

Spencer Butte Park is located in the south, a popular rhododendron garden can be found at Hendricks Park and more than 400 varieties of roses can be found at the Owen Memorial Rose Garden, with over 4,500 roses. In addition, the campus of the University of Oregon, which is in Eugene, is an arboretum with over 500 species of trees and various educational tours and trails on offer to visitors. Most people choose to travel around Eugene by bicycle or foot. Those who love to ski will enjoy what Eugene has to offer as it is the perfect base. Willamette Pass is just one hour from Eugene by car. There are many scenic places en route to stop and admire the view, including waterfalls, forests and hot springs. In fact, Eugene is a great location to use as a hotel or camping spot but travel the nearby vicinity, whether it is one of the ski destinations or simply hiking the surrounding areas. Back in 1970, Eugene's Saturday Market was the first in the US. Today it has grown in size and attracts many people who have stores of their handmade products or home-grown produce. Eugene is home to many events, festivals and celebrations, in venues such as the lane County Fairgrounds. These events include:

An Asian Celebration, every February, held by the Asian Council of Eugene and Springfield and celebrating multiculturalism

The Oregon Festival of American Music or OFAM held every Summer and celebrating local talent

The KLCC Microbrew Festival, with tasters of various craft beers that are locally popular

The local Pride Festival every August, which celebrates the LGBT community

For culture, Eugene has a lot to offer. There are over 20 private art galleries, for example. There is also a range of live theatre, including the Free Shakespeare in the Park, as well as numerous museums. Most popular are the Museum of Natural and Cultural History and the Oregon Air and Space Museum, but there is something to interest most people. Once you have enjoyed the outdoors of Eugene, the 'arts' beckon for evening entertainment. An evening can be spent watching the Eugene Ballet or at the Eugene Opera or Eugene Symphony.

The musical tastes of the area are eclectic, thanks in part to its college town status. There are many live performances, concerts and open mic nights, with genres ranging from electro dance to reggae. Eugene is the setting for many top Hollywood films, including National Lampoon's Animal House in 1978. Famously, it is during filming for that film in Eugene that John Belushi had the idea for the film The Blues Brothers.
