Gdansk is Poland's biggest coastal city and home to the country's largest port. It is on the south coast of the Gulf of Gdansk, on the Baltic Sea. Together with the nearby cities of Sopot and Gdynia it makes up the Triple City metropolitan area. It was here that Hitler's forces first made moves into Poland. In the old quarter of town you can stroll along the Royal Way, visit the Torture Chamber, the Prison Tower, the Grand Armoury, the Green Gate and Dluga Street, with its many restaurants and mansions of impressive architecture, some of which are now museums. Other impressive buildings are the Town Hall and the Court of King Arthur, which is opposite the Neptune Fountain, a meeting place for local lovers. On the colourful Mariacka Street you can find excellent jewellers that sell the city's traditional Amber objects, as well as art galleries, restaurants and many quality boutiques. You should also take the time to visit St. Mary's Basilica and its art works. If nature is your thing, the city boasts many parks and gardens, one of which is home to the zoo. The nearby woods and hills and the sports facilities available make Gdansk a great destination for lovers of sports and games. There are many good hotels on offer in the city and you are sure to find one where you can enjoy a truly relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
