Graz is the capital of the state of Styria in Austria. It was European Capital of Culture in 2003, and its historical centre has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Among the monuments from different periods in a variety of styles, you can see the famous Uhrturm Clock Tower; the Neue Gallerie Art Museum; the Hauptplatz, where you can find the impressive Renaissance Parliament building; the Landeszeughaus arsenal, with its arches and galleries; the Gothic Graz Cathedral; the Church of St Catalina of Alexandria and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II. Go up Mount Schlossberh by funicular railway or, if you prefer, there is a steep stairway carved into the rock. Take a stroll along the banks of the River Mur which has an artificial island with an auditorium. See Eggenberg Castle and its gardens, Mariatrost Basilica, the Diocesan Museum and Graz Opera House. Herrengase is the city's main commercial street. Its universities help to give this city its fun nightlife and it has many bars, clubs, theatres and plenty of accommodation. Try the excellent local cuisine, and here you have a choice of restaurants: modern or Renaissance style. Visit Graz.
