Lviv is an old city, located in the west Ukraine. Founded in the 13th century, it became the capitol of the Galicia region. Since then, this historical metropolis has evolved to become a major cultural center in the east of Europe, as well as a destination for Ukrainian students from all over the country, thanks to the multiple universities located there. Starting on the Market Square, the prominent area in the renaissance Old Town, tourists notice the new Town Hall, featuring a tower. Medieval houses surround the plaza. The black house, built from darkened sandstone for the prominent tax collector, is most famous of them. Other remarkable buildings include the royal house of the Polish king John III Sobieski, the Archbishop's Palace, or the Italian style Badinelli Palace. Multiple fountains and sculptures add a stylish touch to the square. As the city lies in the area of an influence of various Christian faiths, multiple churches and cathedrals add splendour to the town. Some of the most known include an Armenian cathedral with two famous icons, Latin cathedral of Assumption of Mary with a neo-gothic design, and a tall bell tower, Dominican church with a dome ceiling. Located on the hill, that overlooks the city, sits the Lviv High Castle. This defensive fort played a significant role during many battles. It has been damaged and rebuilt multiple times since its construction in 13th century.
