Magdeburg is the capital city of the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt and it lies on the Elbe River. There are many green areas in the city, but do not miss the Rotehorn Park, where you can take a boat trip on the Adolf-Mittag lake; the Herrenkrugpark and the Elbauenpark with its Millennium Tower and butterfly house. For a bit of shopping, go to Breiter Weg street or to the Ernst-Reuter-Allee, with two major shopping centres: City Carree and Allee-Center. Over time, Magdeburg has experienced both destruction and glorious times, and its architecture reminds us of other periods and styles. The Imperial Cathedral, in Gothic style, and the Monastery of Our lady are the city's oldest buildings. Opposite the Town Hall you can see the Magdeburg Rider, a copy of the original statue, kept in the Cultural History Museum. Another major museum is the Art Museum housed in the Monastery of Our Lady. At the Millennium Tower you can see a science and technical exhibition and another option is to sample some regional and international cuisine at the many restaurants in the city. The hotels here are excellent and you will find everything you need to spend a fantastic holiday!
