Morelia is a Mexican city and the capital of the state of Michoacan. The city offers much for the visitor, such as the old town, where you can see the Cathedral. This impressive Baroque building was built in around 1660. You can also see the Plaza de Armas square, which was set out in 1541 and is one of the oldest sites in the city. Recommended too, are the University Cultural Centre, which shows different exhibitions; the Templo de la Merced church, which dates from the year 1604; the Palace of the Executive; the Michoacan Museum, which has a wide range of exhibits; the old Alhondiga building; and the Augustinian Church, which dates to the 16th century. The Morelos Birthplace is one of Morelia's main attractions. This lovely Baroque house was where Jose Maria Morelos, the hero of local independence, was born in 1765. Morelia also has much to offer for children, since it has the Benito Juarez Zoological Garden, which is considered to be the most important zoo in Mexico due to the number of different animals and species. Come to Morelia, and discover it for yourself!
