Newport is located in the county of Gwent in Wales. It is a multicultural community with a unique atmosphere, where traditional industries live side by side with the electronics industry and the new financial services sector. Newport is surrounded by fine landscape which can be appreciated in the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Forest of Dean, which is less than an hour's travel away. Newport is home to one of Europe's finest competition golf courses, located at the Celtic Manor Resort. This will play host to the Ryder Cup in 2010. As well as this, there are more than 30 golf courses in the area. The city also has a historic castle: Newport Castle, built at the beginning of the 14th century on the banks of the River Usk.
