Ostend is a cosmopolitan Belgian port city, in the province of West Flanders. One of the major sights here is the Mercator, a tall ship that has become a museum. Walraversijde is a medieval fishing village that has been excavated; it is possible to visit ancient remains as well as some reconstructed buildings, its coastal fortification (the Atlantikwall) and 2 km. of underground tunnels. See the Prins Karen Memorial, which is the house of Prince Charles of Belgium, with its collections, as well as the James Ensor Museum, which was once the house and studio of the famous painter. Other interesting places are: the Japanese Garden, the Flower Clock, the Fine Arts Museum, Lange Nelle and the Wellington Hippodrome. Remember, too, that it is only 15 minutes in train to Bruges. The beaches are of fine sand, and slope gently down to the sea; these offer all the facilities you need for recreation and sports. You can hire a buggy or a bike, go sailing or fishing, horse riding or surfing, or play all kinds of ball games, as the beaches are quite large so ideal for children. The area's food and drink is very good, with seafood being the speciality on the coast. Try the traditional Flemish stew and Ardennes beer, too. There are good hotels and an interesting nightlife, so why not come and spend your holiday in Ostend.
