Plymouth is a major city on the south coast of the US state of Massachusetts. Originally a British settlement founded by the colonists in 1620, it is one of the oldest towns in the country. Besides being a major port, Plymouth is also a popular tourist destination. Its history revolves around the arrival of the Mayflower, which was carrying the exiles and pioneers that would eventually be referred to as the Pilgrim Fathers. It was William Bradford, one of these founders, who made the tradition of Thanksgiving Day popular in America. Plymouth's history is also the history of the whole United States. Places of interest include, Plymouth Rock, scene of that first landfall and the place where the first stone was laid for the settlement. Today, that same stone is the main attraction at the Pilgrim Memorial State Park, which has an elegant granite monument. To find out more about Plymouth you should visit the Plymouth Plantation, a type of museum of living history, where the colonial period is reenacted, including the atmosphere and people that made up its everyday life. Come and experience the charms of Plymouth on your next holiday! |
