Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and takes its name after Sir Walter Raleigh, the English explorer, who made many expeditions to America and North Carolina. Raleigh is more familiarly called, 'City of Oaks,' due to the large number of grand oak trees lining the walk ways. Tourists and residents enjoy four distinct seasons in terms of weather in Raleigh with short, cold winters and long, warm, humid summers.

Areas within Raleigh, which lies in the north east of North Carolina, include Downtown (the historical hub), Midtown (home to the commerce of Raleigh) and Southeast Raleigh (where the region's outdoor concert venue is located, called the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion, as well as Shaw University). Raleigh is perhaps best known for being part of North Carolina's Research Triangle. This is a center for research in the fields of technology and one of the country's largest research parks of its kind. It attracts a number of important businesspeople to the area.

Those visiting Raleigh can enjoy a range of museums to suit all tastes, from the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame for lovers of sport to the North Carolina Museum of Art. The North Carolina Museum of Art is one of the biggest and best to be found between Washington DC and Atlanta and includes exhibits from around the world, including works from the greats such as Claude Monet. The art scene is big in Raleigh with a number of local galleries, including Cam Raleigh which is a contemporary art museum in the downtown area promoting the work of new and aspiring artists.

Performing arts is an important part of life for locals and visitors to Raleigh. As mentioned, the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion is a popular venue located on Rock Quarry Road and previously called Alltel Pavilion. Major touring artists perform here, especially in the summer during outdoor tours. It is also a popular outdoor movies venue. There is no shortage of live performances, with art organizations ranging from the Opera Company of North Carolina to the Carolina Ballet.

Tourists looking to make the most of the outdoors will be pleased to hear that Raleigh offers numerous leisure attractions, including big open parks, five public lakes, over 100 tennis courts and perhaps most popular, the J.C. Raulston Arboretum. The arboretum and botanical garden is 8 acres in size, free of charge to visitors and maintained and assisted by North Carolina State University in West Raleigh. Socializing is easy in Raleigh, which is often ranked as one of America's best places for single people. It has a lot of energy but feels small enough to be familiar. Downtown Raleigh is the place to go for the biggest variety of night clubs, from dance and sport bars to comedy clubs. Travel in and out of Raleigh is stress free. The area is served by Raleigh-Durham International Airport, which is the second largest airport in North Carolina. In addition, tourists will be pleased to hear that the road and rail network is extensive, as is the opportunity to explore the area by foot, bicycle or bus.
