San Antonio is one of the Lone Star State's biggest and most popular cities, located 150 miles north of the Mexican border in southern Texas. Somewhere in the vicinity of 26 million people visit the city every year. In-state tourists make up a large portion of visitors, while out-of-state and international visitors arrive in healthy numbers too. San Antonio International Airport (SAT) welcomes flights from numerous U.S. and Mexican cities, making it accessible for domestic and international travelers, although the latter will likely need to make a stopover somewhere along the way.

The airport is approximately eight miles from downtown San Antonio, with buses, taxis, rental cars and shuttle services available. Motorists should use I-10 (east-west) or I-35 (north to south). Downtown San Antonio houses a vast supply of hotel accommodation, but visitors will also find a number of suitable hotels in the King William and Alamo Heights districts. Wherever you stay, a hire car may come in handy. Much of San Antonio's touristic appeal stems from its history. Famous for The Alamo, a principle location in Texas' battle for independence from Mexico, the city also houses a large number of historically significant locations.

In addition to The Alamo, visitors often flock to the Mission Conception and Mission San Jose, as well as the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park at large. The Spanish Governor's Palace is another popular choice, as are the San Fernando Cathedral and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. In addition to history, San Antonio also offers plenty of picturesque locales for visitors to enjoy. From the quiet of Brackenridge Park to the scenery of the Japanese Tea Gardens, unwinding is far from impossible in the Alamo City. San Antonio is very much a family-friendly city, offering a wide variety of attractions to keep toddlers, kiddies and teens busy. With its glutton of rollercoasters, the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park is perhaps the favorite of all of these, while SeaWorld San Antonio is wildly popular. San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium offers a varied mix of animals and marine life for visitors to look out for, while Witte Museum - with its snakes, mummies and dinosaurs - is educational, informative and fun!

San Antonio is home to one of the country's best basketball teams, the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, who play at AT&T Center. If you can get hold of tickets, be sure to catch a game. AT&T Center is also the site of the famous San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Visit the city in February for your chance to enjoy the cowboy festivities. Perhaps the most popular attraction of all though is the River Walk. Stretching for three miles along the San Antonio River, the walk houses beautiful scenery, quaint shops, boutique hotels, cafes and much more.

As you might expect in Texas, summer can be uncomfortably hot, with temperatures pushing 100F/38C. Despite this, San Antonio is busiest between June and September, coinciding with school holiday. To get the most out of the city, visiting between November and April is recommended. It'll still be sunny, but it won't be sticky or heaving with visitors.
