The biggest destination on Hainan Island, Sanya still retains an undiscovered and serene character which makes it utterly appealing. Only established as a resort within the last 20 years or so, Sanya offers tourists a chance to experience a place of indescribable beauty and serenity, as well as the opportunity to get to know the Li people, one of the many ethnic groups in China. Sanya is a beach resort with a truly stunning coastline which runs for over 40 kilometres, consisting of three main areas - Yalong Bay, Dadongbai Bay and Sanya Bay. Yalong Bay is the biggest and the most popular with its international resorts, but the others offer just as much beauty as Yalong. The crescent moon shaped Dadonngbai Bay can be found further up the coast from Yalong Bay and is the perfect place for beach lovers. The soft golden sands and the crystalline blue waters are the ideal place to spend a day or even a week. There are a number of water sports and activities to be enjoyed here, including snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming and surfing. For day trips, head to the island of Ximao Zhou, one of two that are just off the coastline of Sanya. Hikers will enjoy the numerous hiking trails on offer through some amazing scenery.
