Smolyan is a province in southern Bulgaria, in the Rhodope mountains. It is a province that is mainly inhabited by Bulgarian Muslims. The city of Smolyan is along Banks of the narrow Cherna river, in the most magical part of the Rhodope range. In 1960 three towns (Smolyan, Raikovo and Ustovo) came together to form the major city of Smolyan. Among the region's most popular sights are: the 18th century bridge crossing the Cherna, the Rodopi Historical Museum, the Art Gallery, the New Centre complex, the Planetarium, the Church of St. Nedelya, erected in 1836, the church of St.Nikola and the Rodopi Theatre. Also, the city is close to one of Bulgaria's main ski resorts, the Pamporovo. Another place that is definitely worth a visit is the lake region and the town of Mogilitza, a charming traditional town with lovely renaissance houses. Smolyan is a magical city full of pretty landscapes and plenty to see and do. Come see it for youself!
