Sorrento is situated at the heart of the Neapolitan Riviera on the south west coast of Italy. It is scenic, picturesque and colorful. The streets are lined with cobbles and the views are breath taking, thanks to its hilly resort and wonderful places to stop and soak in the views. The mild climate and beauty of Sorrento makes it a favorite for summer holidays, as well as anniversaries, honeymoons and weddings or for family trips away. It is popular with old and young, but offers many things for relaxed, retired couples who enjoy a slower pace of life and to soak up the sun in a cultural location.

Sorrento is a classy and sophisticated place. Tourists enjoy its designer boutique shopping, top class restaurants and lively nightlife. The charm of Sorrento lies in its exploration by foot. Small craft and antique shops are tucked away up winding cobbled streets and cafes line the pavements.

It is the ideal place to walk at leisure and soak in the atmosphere, the culture and the relaxed manner of the locals. Hours can be spent wandering the streets and enjoying a coffee and cake in the sunshine. It is best known for its fine lacework and ceramic exports, which can be found for sale in the many quaint shops and street stalls. Via San Cesareo is Sorrento's main shopping street and a must for all keen shoppers. Sorrento is proud of its roots and still looks like an old, classic town. Despite high number of tourists, it has retained its charm. Those who enjoy some culture will be drawn to the Chiesa di San Francesco, an 11th century church, with its beautiful architecture, as well as the bell tower and monastery. What attracts visitors to Sorrento is its class and elegance. It is also close to the towns of Amalfi and Positano, both hits with tourism.

While Sorrento is surrounded by coast and cliffs and overlooks Naples, it does not have a beach, but is luckily close to many towns that boast beautiful beaches. There are a number of excursions running for people who choose to stay in Sorrento, including the most famous which is a trip to Pompeii (less than 40 minutes away by train) which shows the devastation caused by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius some 2000 years ago which killed many people. The day trip is steeped in history.

The best thing about Sorrento is its accessibility. It is the ideal base to explore the surrounding areas. The Marina Grande is the port of Sorrento, with Marina Piccola a small port there also. It is close to other coastal towns, the countryside, the popular Amalfi Coast and popular island of Capri and as mentioned, Pompeii. Sorrento has something to offer everybody as is the perfect holiday destination to unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life back home. The nearest airports are Napoli-Capodichino or Salerno-Pontecagnano and it is easily accessible by boat and rail.
