Located in the North East of England, may not be the most obvious choice of vacation destination, but thanks to an eclectic mix of attractions, it is a destination that may surprise you. The majority of visitors make their way to the city by car, with the A1(M) and A69 being the nearest major roads. Sunderland railway station provides frequent connections to Newcastle, from where travelers can make their way to much of the country.

Newcastle International Airport is the nearest airport to the city, offering flights to and from various locations in the UK and Europe. The city features most major hotel chains as well as an assortment of independent establishments. B&Bs and city apartments can also be booked. Most hotels can be found within the city center, although a number are located on the outskirts of the city. A walk around Sunderland's city center will serve up all the usual city amenities. It'll also unveil some of the city's best sights. Visitors should keep an eye open for the likes of Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Sunderland Empire Theatre, the Holy Trinity Church, and Sunderland Minister, all of which provide interesting and historically significant views of the city.

The Monkwearmouth area of the city is home to two of the region's most impressive historic attractions. St. Peter's Church is an idyllic building that dates back to the seventh century, making it one of Britain's oldest churches. Meanwhile, the Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Abbey may be in ruins but still offers an awe-inspiring feature for visitors to enjoy. Monkwearmouth Station Museum is another attraction not to be missed. Once the region's main train station, today the museum tells an intriguing story. Other popular attractions in and around the city include the Souter Lighthouse, Ryhope Engines Museum, the National Glass Center, and the Northern Gallery of Contemporary Art. Visitors to Sunderland will find the city to be well-stocked with restaurants, cafe's, coffee shops, bars and pubs. Simple and delicious is the theme of the region's cuisine, while the local ale is recommended.

For sports fans, the Stadium of Light is one of the region's finest sports stadiums. Home to Sunderland AFC, the stadium is rocking on game day, and well worth a visit. If football's not your thing, why not spend you Saturday afternoon strolling through one of the city's picturesque public parks, or head out to the coast for an enjoyable seaside walk.

Visitors looking to enjoy a day out will find easy passage to the region's other major city, Newcastle. With history and modern amenities nestled side by side, there's plenty to see and do here. Alternatively, the region surrounding Sunderland is home to a number of pleasant beaches, perfect for a sunny afternoon. As is the case with all of the north of England, winter brings with it brutally cold weather which makes tourism less than enjoyable. The best time to visit Sunderland then is during the spring and summer, when temperatures are pleasant and attractions are open to the public.
