Known for its incredibly beautiful gardens and its mastery in producing silk, the fragrant city of Suzhou is one of the most stunning places to visit in China. Only an hour from Shanghai, the town of Suzhou was established around a network of canals which contributed to its prosperity. The gardens are Suzhou's most prized possession and should not be missed out. Canglang Ting, which translates as Dark Blue Wave Pavilion, was first established back in the Song Dynasty by Su Zimei. You come to the gardens by passing over a lavish stone bridge and a marble archway, making it a truly spectacular approach. Inside, the central gardens were designed to look like a forested hill. Within Canglang Ting there are a number of sights to see, including the Five Hundred Sage Temple. The North Temple Pagoda, constructed back in the third century CE, is an ancient masterpiece. It originally had 11 storeys but today it only retains seven of them but is still the largest pagoda south of the Yangzi River. If you head to the top of the pagoda you will experience some outstanding views of the town and the surrounding area. Suzhou gained wealth and fame due to its production of silk. The Suzhou Silk Museum traces the history of silk production, from the legendary creator Lei Zu, right up to modern times. The various looms, machines and collections of silks are breathtaking. A city immersed in grace and beauty, Suzhou offers the very best in Chinese culture, history and elegance.
