Verona Italy is situated in Veneto, in north Italy (Europe). It lies on the Adige river and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in northern Italy. The name is instantly recognizable for fans of literature. Shakespeare set a number of his play here and made reference to the city of Verona in works such as Romeo and Juliet, the Taming of the Shrew and of course, the two Gentleman of Verona. The reason Verona is so popular with visitors is in part thanks to its art scene and heritage. The city has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status, thanks to its stunning architecture. The mix between old and new is subtle in Verona, which is proud of its heritage but also a modern day international commercial center. Tourists enjoy a welcoming atmosphere and subtropical climate. It is best visited in the summer, which is hot, rather than winter which is cold and humid. The beginning or end of the summer season is most comfortable in terms of temperature. During an earthquake in the year 1118, much of the Roman monuments and architecture from the early Middle Ages was destroyed in Verona, which led to a large scale rebuild. Its highlight from this is the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, a fine example of Romanesque architecture at its best. The Duomo, a Romanesque church, is also a favorite with visitors. Other visitor highlights include:

The Arena, a Roman marble open-air opera house which survives the 12th century earthquake and was built in the 1st century AD. It seats 30,000 people and as well as general visits to the Arena, it is the stage to the opera greats of our time and numerous live concerts. The Castle on the River Adife, called Castelvecchio was built in the 1350s. The fortress was damaged by Napoleon and again in World War One by bombings, but has been restored and is now a large museum. Piazza delle Erbe is an area with many cafes, restaurants and nightlife and popular with visitors. Verona offers tourists a diverse mix, enjoyed by all ages and for those with varied interests. It is a pretty and picturesque place, with excellent Italian cuisine and wines. It has changed so much in its history that a tour is highly recommended to get an idea of how things may have been in the city's history and to learn more about it. It is the ideal city for a romantic break away, to walk the same streets and visit the same sights as Shakespeare's favorite characters.
