Williston is a city in the state of North Dakota and best known for its agriculture but in recent years it has seen a boom in incomers due to the shale-oil boom. As such, the once quiet area is now an increasingly popular tourist destination with a lot of money being invested in to the area, its facilities and accommodation and nightlife. Visitors can enjoy Lake Sakakawea, which is close to Williston and offers a fun-filled outing with a variety of recreational activities such as boating and swimming, as well as nearby hiking trails. Williston has a number of sites of historic interest, often part of tours for visitors. These include: Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, a reconstructed trading post at the border between Montana and North Dakota which lies on the Missouri River.

It is a short drive from Williston and was built in 1828-9, during the fur-trade. It is one of the first National Historic Landmarks in the US and now maintained by the National Park Service. The Old Armory is another place listed on the National Register of Historic Places (since 1985). It was built in 1915 and is now home to a community theater. Fort Burford, a military fort of historic importance locally, especially as it is the site of a military graveyard. There is a museum highlighting the stories behind these various places, called the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center. It takes a look at local history of the area.

Williston is an enjoyable family holiday destination and has benefited from the considerable growth in the economy and oil boom. One of the most popular places to visit is the Williston Area Recreation Center, which is a recent addition to the area having been built in early 2014. It is 234,000 square foot and includes indoor surfing, golf, a water park and traditional sporting facilities including a tennis court and indoor running track.

In addition, golf lovers will enjoy Williston which boasts many golfing opportunities. There is a nine hole course called the Williston Municipal Golf Course and two eighteen hole courses. Eagle Ridge Golf Club is located north of Williston and the eighteen holes stretch across the 6,240 year course. The Links of North Dakota at Red Mike Resort lies along Lake Sakakawea and is ranked 41st in America in the top 100 courses.

Art is catered for in Williston with the James Memorial Art Center. The facility was originally a community library and is now an arts and culture center for the whole of the community, with various exhibitions and art workshops. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Sloulin Field International Airport serves Williston and Amtrak is the national passenger rail system for the area with a station in Williston. Once there, the best way to explore the area is to hire a car to enable easy exploration of the nearby areas.
