Seattle is known for being a trendy and exciting place to visit. As well as the latest city amenities, the Emerald City also houses a wide range of tourist attractions, green spaces and historic landmarks. It's no wonder that some 18 million people make their way to the city every year. The city is served by Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which offers a myriad of domestic connections as well as overseas flights to the likes of London, Tokyo, Dubai, Reykjavik and Amsterdam. The airport is located 15 miles south of downtown, with light rail, express buses and taxis offering passage between the two. The Space Needle, Seattle's iconic landmark, is one of the most popular attractions for first time visitors to the city. The looming tower, which was constructed for the 1962 World's Fair, has spent the last 50 years or so providing some of the best views across the city and beyond.
Pike Place Market is another of the city's most enduring landmarks. This bustling market is a hive of activity from early in the morning, with visitors treated to a host of stalls, cafes, shops and more. Check out the underground portion of the market for something a little different.
Speaking of something a little different, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks provide an anything but everyday sight. Serving as the principle gateway between the Puget Sound and the Lake Washington Canal, the locks provide passage for boats passing between the two. Watch on as a vessel makes it slow journey through the canal. Be sure to keep an eye out for salmon and sea lions in the process.
The Pacific Northwest is famed for its fresh air. Visitors to Seattle will find the opportunity to enjoy this in any of the city's parks and gardens. Popular choices include Discovery Park, Volunteer Park and Kubota Garden. The latter is a serene Japanese Garden that serves as the perfect backdrop against which to relax. Meanwhile, Mount Rainier and Mount Si offer a hiker's paradise for those looking to get in touch with nature. Other popular attractions in this part of the world include the Waterfront District, complete with giant Ferris wheel and Seattle Aquarium; Woodland Park, home to the city's zoo; and Pioneer Square and its cobblestone streets.
Culture vultures will find a wealth of museum and galleries within the city. Choice cuts include the Burke Museum of Natural History, the Seattle Asian Art Museum, and the Museum of Flight. A trip to Seattle wouldn't be complete without a trip on the Puget Sound. Board a boat and head out to Tillicum Village on Blake Island for an enjoyable and peaceful afternoon. Visitors planning an extended visit to Seattle may wish to plan an overnight stay in the beautiful city of Vancouver. The Canadian city is a three hour drive - or a 50 minute flight - across the border. Seattle's main tourist season falls between June and August. If you don't have school holidays to contend with, try arranging your visit between September and November when things are noticeably quieter and the weather still holds out. Few tourists brave Seattle over the winter, while spring can be wet and cold. |
