Carcassone is the capital of the Departement of Aude, in southern France. It is a walled medieval city located on top of a hill and next to the Aude River. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On Bastille Day, the 14th of July, the city puts on a fireworks display that is really worth a look. You will be amazed by the number of vineyards in and around Carcassone. Numerous towers, walls and drawbridges surround this medieval city, the biggest walled city in Europe. A good way to see the town is from the air, either on a hot air balloon or in a helicopter. The citadel has 52 towers and two concentric walls. We recommend visiting the Castle of the Count, the inquisition palace, the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse, Place du Grand Puits and Place Marcou. You will be able to stay in the old centre, or in the more affordable accommodation in the outskirts. Remember to take a boat trip along the Canal du Midi.
