Leuven is a university city and the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium. Its lively streets are often full of students, and there are a wide variety of bars, restaurants and shops. The Catholic University of Leuven is the oldest in the country, dating from 1425, and it has an excellent reputation. In fact, a great many overseas students come to the city to study because of the University's fame. Among the city's main attractions is the Town Hall. Built between 1448 and 1463, it is one of the loveliest examples of late Gothic architecture in Europe. Another recommended monument is the Church of St Peter; also in the Gothic style, it dates back to 1425. A curious historic site is the Leuven beguinage, or Begijnhof, which was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1998. Leuven is a vibrant city with much to offer. It is an important cultural and university city that you are bound to enjoy!
