Qingdao is the much loved coastal city of vibrant Shangdong Province and one of the best tourist destinations on China's coastline. Also known as the Switzerland of China due to its heavily German character, Qingdao is a wonderful mix of Chinese culture and colonial history. There are various tourist attractions to visit in Qingdao, one of the most popular being Qingdao Ying Binguan. This was the home to the German governor, created in 1903, a grand mansion oozing opulence and sumptuousness. It is said that the mansion cost 2,450,000 Taels of silver and when Kaiser Wilhelm II was given the bill, the governor of Qingdao was instantly fired. In 1957, Chairman Mao and his family used the mansion as a holiday home when they visited them. Qingdao has some wonderful temples. Tianhou Temple is a small temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea and of sailors, who is also known in other areas as Mazu and Niangniang. Qingdao is a beautiful coastal city and as such is home to some wonderful beaches. Swimming is best experienced here between June and September and Shiaoren is the most popular beach. The soft golden sands are extremely popular, so to get yourself a good spot you will need to get here early. Qingdao is known as one of the safest and cleanest cities in China and with its many attractions, restaurants and fresh air it is little wonder why it is so popular with visitors. |
