Guildford is an English town in the county of Surrey and the administrative centre for the South East Region. It is a very historic place nestling among the hills of Surrey. The River Wey, which runs through the town, was important for trade and travel in England. Before the railways, Guildford was an important base for travellers on the journey between London and Portsmouth, since it is around halfway between the capital and the coastal port. Guildford maintains its traditional cobbled streets and tracks beside the river, yet it offers all the comforts of a modern town with excellent shops and places for leisure. The broad High Street has some thriving businesses and restaurants with fine dishes. Furthermore, there are many historical buildings, such as Guildford Castle, an impressive ancient fortification surrounded by a field with many attractive flowers; the Abbot's Hospital, which dates to 1619; and the Guildford House Gallery, a traditional 17th century house with an interesting collection of artworks. Guildford is a charming town, why not pay it a visit?
