Made famous by Daphne du Maurier's 1936 novel, this greystone hotel and pub dates from 1750, when its remote Bodmin Moor location attracted smugglers. It's 4 miles' walk from Brown Willy, the highest hill in Cornwall, and the A30, halfway between Bodmin and Liskeard.
Traditional rooms have en suite bathrooms, satellite TV and free Wi-Fi; some rooms include 4-poster beds. Family rooms are available.
Full hot breakfast is included. The restaurant provides a kids' menu and a Sunday roast, and the atmospheric bar with oak beams and a stone fireplace serves light meals, real ales and ciders. The Smugglers Museum (fee) is also on-site.
