Cancun is located on southeast Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, is the one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Mexico. With sandy beaches, beautiful aquamarine waters, and an almost endless supply of sunshine, it's not hard to see why. Cancun is served by Cancun International Airport (CUN), which welcomes travelers from across Mexico as well as those from North America, South America, Europe, and the Caribbean.
The majority of visitors to Cancun stay in the appropriately-named Hotel Zone, which houses some of the biggest names in the global hotel business. In addition to standard hotels, a number of resort hotels also operate in the region, offering a slice of Caribbean paradise for those looking to fully unwind. Travelers looking for beautiful beaches will find no shortage here. Cancun has plenty of beaches, not to mention cafes, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. A popular choice with Spring Breakers, the resort city can be particularly hectic with noise and activity levels exceeding what you might expect of a beach destination. Visitors looking for a quieter slice of beach life might want to try out the Playa Delfines, which is generally less busy and rather calm. Alternatively, hop on the ferry and head out to the idyllic Isla Mujeres. Situated eight miles offshore, the Island of Women - to give it its English name - is home to sea turtles, a haunted plantation mansion, and some of the most serene beaches in this part of the world.
Believe it or not, there's more to the region than sandy beaches, warm waters and bronzed bodies. The Yucatan Peninsula has a rich and storied history that dates back to pre-Colombian time. Numerous archaeological sites can be visited in and around the city, including El Meco and El Rey. The ruins on display offer an intriguing glimpse into the past, not to mention a photo opportunity or two. The crown jewel of archaeological sites in the region has to be Chichen Itza. Regular bus tours make their way to the site about two hours away. Here visitors can marvel at El Castillo, the stunning Mayan pyramid that has become world famous. While four-hour round trip might not sound like a great way to spend your vacation, the rewards on offer here are genuinely priceless.
Back in Cancun, the city also offers a variety of traditional pursuits. While the markets and shops are perfect for a spot of retail therapy, the region's lush golf courses are perfect for anyone hoping to take in 18 holes. Other popular tourist attractions in the region include Delphinus Dreams Cancun, which offers visitors the chance to swim with dolphins; the Cancun Underwater Museum, a diver's delight complete with statues and monuments; and Xel-Ha Park, a water-based theme park. Cancun's peak tourist period comes in winter as travelers look to escape the cold climes of North America and Europe. Temperatures are more manageable between December and April, and while hotel rooms are generally more expensive, there are still deals to be had. Travelers looking to avoid the skin-soaked fest that is Spring Break should bypass March and April. Visitors considering a September-November trip should be aware that tropical storms can ravage this part of Mexico. As with most towns and cities in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo (May 5) brings out a party atmosphere and is well worth checking out. |
