Jackson is said to be named after an early 19th century beaver trapper called Davey Jackon, who was part of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. The 'hole' in Jackson Hole comes from the mountain men who would scramble down the steep slopes into the low valleys, as though entering a hole. Jackson Hole valley is formed where Teton and Gros Ventre Ranges meet. Teton National park and Jackson Lake can be found to the north west of Jackson Hole and the town of Jackson is to the south.

The weather can be cold in Jackson Hole due to the steep mountains and high altitude but the summer is mild, warm and pleasant. It depends what interests you as to the best time of year to visit. If you enjoy the warm weather and outdoors, a trip in summer means lots of opportunities to enjoy the thriving tourism on offer. Activities such as trout fishing, white water rafting in the Snake River Canyon, horse riding and mountain biking are enjoyed by many. Teton hiking trails can be explored and enjoyed by foot, as can trips to Grand Teton Park and Yellowstone National Park with its stunning waterfalls. Thrill seekers can enjoy paragliding, a great way to take in the scenic views. There are a number of campsites for families and travelers to spend the night.

If you enjoy braving the colder weather and enjoy your snow sports, winter is the best time to visit. Activities including skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, sleigh rides and even dog sledding can fill up the day for all of the family. There are many ski lessons available for beginners or great slopes for the more experienced skiers.
