Oklahoma City, situated at the heart of the state of Oklahoma, is becoming a more and more popular destination for visitors from across the United States and further afield. With historic landmarks, scenic parks, family-friendly attractions and a whole heap of alternative facilities on offer, it's not hard to see why. Oklahoma City is served by Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) which offers connecting flights to major cities across the United States. International visitors will need to arrange connecting flights as the airport doesn't serve international flights.

Travelers planning on a road trip to Oklahoma City will find the city is readily accessible from I-35, I-40 and I-44. The city houses an assortment of hotels, motels and other accommodation options, most of which can be found in the downtown district. Oklahoma City houses a number of major attractions that find their way onto the lists of first-time visitors and those returning to the region. Top of any list is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Here you'll find a vast collection of artwork, relics and artefacts relating to the history of the west and the Native American tribes that populated this part of the world.

The Oklahoma City Stockyards are another popular destination for visitors seeking out an authentic taste of the region. On Mondays and Tuesdays livestock is paraded and sold, adding to the atmosphere. Culture vultures should also get a kick out of the Oklahoma History Center and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Looking for something a little left of center? Oklahoma City also houses museums dedicated to railroads, firefighters, and bones respectively.

Families visiting OKC will find a number of child-friendly attractions, including the Frontier City amusement park, the White Water Bay water park, and the Science Museum Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens offers a chance to see numerous species (animal and plant) to see up close and personal. One of the more somber attractions to be found in the city is the Oklahoma City National Memorial, which honors the victims of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Located on the former site of the federal building that was bombed on that fateful day, the park features a reflecting pool, survivor's wall, and survivor's tree. The 168 empty chairs serve to commemorate the 168 victims that were killed in the bombing.

The Myriad Botanical Gardens offer visitors a chance to get away from city life for an hour or two. The beautiful flowers and plants on display will capture the imagination as you walk around the garden. Meanwhile, St. Joseph's Cathedral displays impressive architecture as well as a place to reflect. The Boathouse District offers visitors the chance to do something different. This redeveloped neighborhood offers kayaking, paddle boarding, dragon boating and a host of other water sports. It's also the starting point to a number of scenic biking trails. Most tourists choose to visit Oklahoma City between July and October. Visitors planning a trip at the height of summer should be ready for intense heat, while visitors trying to buck the trend with a spring visit should be prepared for rain and even tornadoes. With smaller crowds and manageable weather, fall can prove to be the best time to visit.
