Portland is the most important city in the north-eastern US state of Maine. It is the biggest oil port on the eastern seaboard and the port with the most foreign trade in Maine. Among its most impressive buildings are the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception; Franklin Tower, which is the tallest building in Maine; the Customs House, which replaces the old post office; and the Naval Hospital.
