Wakefield, situated just south of the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, is home to castles, museums and a host of other attractions that make it a surprise hit with tourists visiting the region. Visitors looking to make their way to Wakefield can do so by road, rail and air. The M1 passes directly by the city (north and south) while the M62 offers easy passage east to west. Wakefield Westgate railway station offers frequent connections to Leeds, York, Edinburgh, Nottingham, London and a host of other destinations across the country. Meanwhile, Leeds Bradford International Airport - located 19 miles away - offers internal and international flights, with many destinations in Europe served.

While it might not be home to an extensive number of hotels, there are ordinarily enough hotel rooms to meet the need of visitors. Most hotels are located right in the city center, and with a hotel to suit most budgets, it's not too hard to find a good deal here. In terms of tourist attractions, Wakefield is home to a number of impressive structures and landmarks. The likes of Wakefield Cathedral, the Chantry Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin, and the Theatre Royal all offer their own unique brand of historic significance and imposing architecture. The best historical attractions are to be found just outside the city though. The ruins of Sandal Castle provide intrigue, not to mention stunning countryside views. Likewise, the ruins of Pontefract Castle are well worth a visit.

Meanwhile, Nostell Priory - a 300-year-old country house - proves that not everything in this part of the world is in ruins. Back in town you'll find a host of galleries and museums, all packed with interesting artefacts and exhibits. You'll also find a selection of enjoyable eateries and watering houses too. Visitors looking to indulge in a spot of retail therapy will find plenty of shopping centers, markets, souvenir shops and other retail outlets within the city, while there's some serious shopping to be done in nearby Leeds and Sheffield.

While it wouldn't take all that long to see what Wakefield itself has to offer, the surrounding region is home to a vast number of attractions that can fill up any trip itinerary. Leeds, York and Sheffield all offer up the opportunity to enjoy a city break. Again, all three are home to a variety of historical attractions and first class modern amenities. Those preferring to get out in the open should make a beeline for the Peak District National Park. Here you'll find some of Britain's most stunning scenery, complete with picturesque walking trails. Spend the weekend or try out a short trail if you've only a day to spare.

For a touch of culture while you're outdoors, head to West Bretton and take a stroll around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Here you'll find some of the finest sculptures in the region. Peak tourist time in Wakefield and West Yorkshire comes between the months of May and September, when the weather is generally quite fair. Visitors looking to beat the rush should visit in early May or late September, when children are at school.
