Yokohama is second only to Tokyo as the most populous city in Japan. Since its days as a modest fishing village in the nineteenth century, it has amassed a large number of attractions that will be of interest to any visitor. One of the most popular and well regarded destinations in Yokohama is Sankeien Garden. Founded in 1902 by the wealthy silk merchant Sankei Hara, the garden has been a hotspot for Japanese culture at several points in the country's history. Contrasting with Sankeien Garden is Yamashita Park, a more western-influenced public park. The park is located along the city's waterfront and offers a good view of some other sites such as the Hikawa Maru - an ocean liner that has been converted into a museum - and the Yokohama Marine Tower. Another place to visit is Nogeyama Zoo, which dates from 1951 and is the city's first zoo. As admission is free, there is nothing to lose with a trip. There are many other places to see in Yokohama, of course. A brief list would include Landmark Tower, Japan's tallest building; the Hakkeijima Sea Paradise aquarium; and the Yokohama Chinatown, which is the oldest Chinatown in Japan. Yokohama is a city full of appealing destinations that will be worth a look from any tourist.
