Just 8 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide, Matemo Island is a magical destination, with pristine beaches enveloped by an azure sea, offset by the distinctive silhouette of thousands of palm trees. In the surrounding waters part of the protected Quirmbas Archipelago National Park - an astounding abundance of marine life can been seen, including turtles, dolphins, Potato groupers, Moray eels and large pelagics. The coral reefs teem with a variety of reef fishes and nudibranches and offshore, massive schools of various game-fish are commonly encountered. Each of the 24 thatched air-conditioned chalets is situated within metres of the beach and offers en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, mini-bar and verandah - complete with hammock for watching the world go by. Gently elevated above the sea, the central facilities include a bar and restaurant and swimming pool with sweeping views over the ocean. Fresh, seafood-oriented meals are served in a variety of locations, from the elevated dining area to the poolside or on the sand with the sea lapping gently nearby. To ensure ultimate relaxation, a range of spa treatments is on offer and can be enjoyed wherever guests please. A world of activity is open to those who want to explore Matemo's natural treasures. Fishermen can revel in the fact that, with deep water close to the island, one doesn't have to travel far for thrilling encounters with big game fish. The protected waters around Matemo also offer some of the finest diving in the world, with untouched coral reefs and an astounding diversity of marine species. A host of new dive sites are only now beginning to be explored. For guests who enjoy water sports, the Activities Centre provides the base from which sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, tubing and banana boats are offered. Kayaks and snorkels are also available for guests to explore the island's clear waters. A visit to neighbouring Ibo Island provides a true appreciation of the cultural richness of the Quirimbas islands. A short water-taxi ride away from Matemo, Ibo provides a cultural feast for the senses, its rich and sometimes dark history coloured by Portuguese and Arab slave trading influences. Breathtakingly beautiful and original, Matemo offers spectacular diving, fishing and snorkeling on a palm-studded island within the Quirimbas Archipelago. Ideal for families, honeymooners, or those simply jaded by everyday life, Matemo offers an unhurried and carefree escape.
