Welcome to The Starr Restaurant with Rooms. We are situated in the historic Essex market town of Great Dunmow. With nearby attractions such as Audley End House and the picturesque towns of Thaxted and Saffron Walden, it makes for a delightful stay. On the first floor we have two private dining rooms suitable for parties or business meetings. In the Courtyard, we have converted the old stable block into eight lovely bedrooms all with private facilities. Between London and the sea lies the ancient Saxon County of Essex. As you travel from west to east, the landscape in this vast county transforms from historic woodlands, through rolling wheat-fields dotted with poppies and windmills, to the estuaries and coastal villages and towns of the great North Sea. Throughout Essex there are so many things to do. With so many great attractions to visit, whatever your interests, you can be sure of a great day out. Essex has a number of notable stately homes; Audley End House near Saffron Walden was once a Royal palace while Ingatestone Hall has been owned by the same family since the 16th century. Layer Marney Tower is the tallest Tudor gatehouse in Britain, made more impressive by the lavish terracotta decoration. Traces of medieval England can be discovered in the many delightful market towns such as Saffron Walden, Thaxted with its 500 year old Guildhall or Paycocke's House, a National Trust property in Coggeshall. Close to the European mainland, Essex has been influenced by many different cultures and historical events. The Normans left their mark in castles at Colchester, Castle Hedingham, Stansted and elsewhere. In the Courtyard, we have converted the old stable block into eight lovely bedrooms all with private facilities. All of our rooms have an individual appeal. It's convenient too - we are only eight miles from the M11, Junction 8 and London Stansted Airport where there is a 40-minute express rail link to London Liverpool Street.
