Xi'an, in China, is the capital of Shaanxi Province. It is one of China's most interesting cities, as historically it was the point of departure of the Silk Road. Indeed, with a history of 3,000 years, it is considered to be one of the most important cities in world history. One of the city's most popular attractions is the famous Terracotta Army, which forms part of the mausoleum of the first Qin emperor. It was discovered by accident in 1974, and since 1987 is has been UNESCO World Heritage. The Army has more than 7,000 sculptures of soldiers and horses, and these were buried in 210-209 BC by the self-styled first Emperor of China, who belonged to the Qin Dynasty. Xi'an is full of historical attractions, such as the City Wall, built during the Ming Dynasty. The Bell Tower, also built by the Ming Emperors, is one of the city's landmarks and centrepoints, as the four main streets depart from here. The Great Mosque, built in 742, is an amazingly well-preserved monument, and a testament to the religious diversity of China. The magical city of Xi'an is one of the world's ""eternal cities"". |
